When Lata Mangeshkar lends her voice to a bhajan, it transcends melody—it becomes meditation. “Santo Karam Ki Gati Nyari”, a soul-stirring Meera bhajan from the album Chala Vahi Des, is one such timeless offering. Composed by Pt. Hridaynath Mangeshkar, the song explores the mystic paradoxes of divine grace—how the Lord’s karmic justice often defies worldly logic.

The lyrics, penned in the voice of Meera Bai, marvel at the Lord’s mysterious ways: deer are gifted large eyes, owls receive radiant feathers, and fools are crowned kings while scholars wander in poverty. Each verse is a poetic reminder that divine will operates beyond human comprehension.

Lata ji’s rendition is ethereal. Her voice glides through the Sargam like a prayer—soft, reverent, and soaked in bhakti. The alap in the beginning sets a contemplative tone, and the subtle use of raag Bhairavi adds emotional depth.

The bhajan’s arrangement is minimal—just a tanpura and soft tabla—allowing the lyrics and melody to shine. It’s not just a song; it’s a spiritual reflection on karma and surrender.

Anecdotally, this bhajan was part of Hridaynath Mangeshkar’s ambitious project to revive Meera’s poetry through classical compositions. Lata ji reportedly recorded it in a single take, moved by the depth of the verses.

Whether you sing it or simply listen, “Santo Karam Ki Gati Nyari” invites you to pause, reflect, and accept the divine play with humility.
