Sargam for Rabindra Sangeet – Tumi Robe Nirobe…

Scale of flute used to make these notations : G#

This song is one of the best melodies composed by Rabindranath Tagore.  Very soothing and romantic.  All the notes at G# scale are Shuddh except Tivr M at few places.  But, to play it perfectly on flute, you need to practice playing ‘High Pancham’ (usually achieved by opening the first hole from top and blowing sharply) which you have to play at the words “Bhubano” at the second line of first Antara and “Swapano” at the 5th line of second Antara.

How to read SARGAM
  • CAPITAL LETTERS Shuddh Swars (Natural Notes)
  • small letters Komal Swars (Flat Notes)
  • with # [hash] or ^ [exponent] = Tivra Madhyam (M# / M^)
  • Letter/Alphabet ONLY = Medium Pitch/Normal blow on flute
  • Letter/Alphabet PRECEDED BY a ” . ” [full stop] or  a ” , ” [comma] = Low Octave Note/Softer blow on flute
  • Letter/Alphabet FOLLOWED BY a ‘ [single quote] = High Octave Note/harder blow on flute
  • Notes in { } “murki” have to be played very fast without any pause
  • A Note in ( ) “kann swar” has to be just touched before moving on to the next note
  • A “~” between two Notes  = “meend”. That is, you have to glide from one note to another slowly to produce that wavy effect.
  • Few “….” (dots) after a note = Play and hold that note

  2. I am very bigginneer in flute notations. However I can understand most of the symbols in notations. But some of the symbols like in this case –
    (R)G
    G…M
    G~R

    What are these symbols representing?
Please help me as I am very keen to learn this song.
    Thank you

    1. notes within () = kann swar, i.e., you have to just touch it to play the adjacent note.
note followed by … = long note, i.e., hold the note before playing the next one.
notes separated by ~ = meend sur, i.e., you have to slowly move from one note to another.
