Sargam notations for romantic hindi Song:

Tere Bina Jiya Jaye Naa
Movie: Ghar (1978)
Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
Music : R D Burman
Lyrics: Gulzar

The following Sargam notes are produced on G# scale of flute.  In fact I had to re-write the entire Sargam when I thought that the part “..na… ho oooo” was not sounding good when I took the first note of this song as “Ga”.  Then, I came down a note below and started the song at “Re” instead of “Ga”.  That made the difference and that humming part in the song then sounded good with “SRG SRG SRG”.  The Antara of this song contains komal Gandhar note (g).

What a fabulous song by RD Burman, Gulzar, Lata and Kishore!  This song is perhaps based on Raag Kalyani (though I’m not very sure).  In case anybody has further information on which raag this song is based on kindly comment below.  The use of Madol instrument in this song is exemplary and even today, one can easily guess the song only by its “Tung Tung Ta Ta, Tung Tung Ta Ta…” tune in the starting.  Melodious!

How to read SARGAM
  • CAPITAL LETTERS Shuddh Swars (Natural Notes)
  • small letters Komal Swars (Flat Notes)
  • with # [hash] or ^ [exponent] = Tivra Madhyam (M# / M^)
  • Letter/Alphabet ONLY = Medium Pitch/Normal blow on flute
  • Letter/Alphabet PRECEDED BY a ” . ” [full stop] or  a ” , ” [comma] = Low Octave Note/Softer blow on flute
  • Letter/Alphabet FOLLOWED BY a ‘ [single quote] = High Octave Note/harder blow on flute
  • Notes in { } “murki” have to be played very fast without any pause
  • A Note in ( ) “kann swar” has to be just touched before moving on to the next note
  • A “~” between two Notes  = “meend”. That is, you have to glide from one note to another slowly to produce that wavy effect.
  • Few “….” (dots) after a note = Play and hold that note
